My Sony MZ-R55 MiniDisc player and recorder was given to me by my brother back in 1998. My brother lives in Japan and got it for me as a college graduation present. In college I was an art student and did a lot of multi-media installations where I mixed video, audio and sculpture art. Back in the 1990s it wasn’t easy to get high quality audio recordings, the only option up to that point was digital audio tape (DAT) recorders that were very expensive. When recordable MDs came along it put CD quality audio recording in the palm of your hand. The cute little MD discs were fun to use and the protective case kept the disc from getting scratched and skipping during recording and playback. It was really fun making little “mix tapes” for road trips or going to the gym, much like playlists today.

In this video I’ll go over the unit and show how it works, how it sounds and we’ll do some test recordings of me playing guitar and singing.
